Things should start to play out over the next few weeks the Tool City Tournament and head to head dual meets approach. At 103 Tool City features the #1 and #2 wrestlers in the region possibly meeting up in Peters and Gromacki. Freshman #5 Joe Wheeling has had a very impressive start to his high school career with at 13-1 record. He could challenge Peters and Gromacki for the Tool City title. 112lbs has been boosted by the dropping of TJ Brandt from 119. #1 Stone, #5 Ward, and #6 Vizza will all be at Tool City. Look for Nyama to drop on Jan. 15 when the 2 pounds kick in. Polacek is currently the hands down #1 at 119 with a significant drop-off back to #2 thru #6, but I think this will change. Gibson had a strong showing at the Hurricane Classic finishing 5th. I look for Gillihan, Loht, and possibly Traxler to make their way down. 125 has not seen much head to head action among top 6 wrestlers. Shawn Spearman met Caleb Loht at the King of the Mountain with Loht winning the bout. I also look for some migration from 130, most notably Bosko and Wheeling. Don’t be surprised to see Yori here after Jan. 15th as well. Kody Young made his first appearance of the year, thus putting himself into the top spot at 130. Bosko suffered a loss to Zach Britton of Bradford after moving up to 135 for their dual meet. Tool City should be interesting as #2, #3, #4, and #5 regionally will all be competing. After a shaky start to the season state champ Steve Spearman got things rolling in Bethlehem over the Holiday break. He beat PIAA 6th place-winner Scot Wolfinger of Quakertown and the thrashed PIAA 3rd placer Mike Racciato of Pen Argyl. Tanner Hough finished 5th at the Powerade and as was mentioned Britton owns a win over Bosko. Jake Schultz is off to a strong start as is PIAA State Qualifier Seth Spack, who is up 5 weight classes from last season. 145 Bosak has made the drop to 145 after starting the season at 152 and is the clear favorite here. The rest of this weight is a crap shoot. I look for Parsons and Walstrom to make their way down soon. Brill is ruling the roost at 152, but Geno Morelli has had a nice start to the season. Morelli owns wins over Bosak and Rustin Barrick of Mechanicsburg. Barrick owns a win over Parsons in the Cumberland Valley finals. A Morelli vs. Parsons meeting could happen at Tool City. 160 is by far the deepest weight class in the region. Havers is the clear #1, but the rest of the weight class is very even. Towers is now down, Buckwalter hasn’t lost, Hoffman was 3rd at Manheim and beat Heynoski, Harris has a big win over Parsons in a dual meet. The wild card in the 160 picture is McDowell’s Mike Vollant. He lost a tough 3-2 decision to Buckwalter at KOM and was the runner-up at Bethlehem. Jake Taylor has been strong as of late winning Manheim and Top Hat. Lascoli hasn’t lost yet and Grieb was 7th at Powerade. Tool City will feature an array of NW Region AAA wrestlers as #4 Chase, #6 Morrison, and unranked state qualifier Jake Burnside of Titusville will all compete. Burnheimer is the top gun at 189, but Walters hasn’t lost yet, and Markel Keys made a statement finishing 3rd at Manheim. Sophomore Welton has been undefeated through Decemeber. #5 Keys and #6 Hanna could meet at Tool City. Tyson Searer is 12-1 on the season and is the man to beat at 215. Bell and Hill will be looking to unseat him. #3 Hill and #6 Warner will both be at Tool City, as well as #5 Bryant. The big boys have a trio of heavy hitters in Corl, Baker, and Duplin. All 3 have PIAA hardware, but Thompson has jumped up to 285 and is having a strong season. Alec Gluvna is the man turning heads. Gluvna has a win over 2010 Region 4th placer Logan Thompson and lost a tight 1-0 match to Baker. Baker and Thompson could meet at Tool City. Don’t be surprised to see Thompson down at 215 by season’s end.

NW Region Notes: Things were pretty quiet on the District 6 front over the weekend, with only a few teams in action.  Central Mountain dominated the Jersey Shore Duals, beating a strong District 10 AA Greenville team in the finals.  A few regional wrestlers made dropped weight classes with the 2lb growth allowance kicking in on Friday.  The most notable was Colton Spade, Lewistown sliding down to 152.  That makes the top 3 at that weight class pretty stout with Alton, Spade, and Towers holding those top 3 spots.  That said, I look for some movement from some of the lower ranked wrestlers in that weight class.  With 160 looking wide open once you get past Haver, Bradford and 145 looking much the same after you get past Alton.  District 10 had their annual region dual meet event at Corry High School.  All 11 District 10 AAA schools were in action.  McDowell and Erie Prep finished the 2 day event with 8-0 records.  Erie Prep's Jon Agnello returned to action this weekend at 119, but suffered 2 losses in his return.  The most significant coming at the hands of Trevor Graham, Franklin by fall.  Amani Bosko, Warren made the drop to 125 and looked good in his debut there knocking off Dylan Matz, McDowell and going undefeated at the Corry Duals.  As was noted last week Nick Gibson, McDowell continues to turn heads, he finished to weekend with an 8-0 record and had a very impressive win over AA state qualifier Tyler Pier of Harbor Creek.  He will be headed for a head to head show down with Tim Wheeling, General McLane on Jan. 27.   Scott Bosak's return to State College is confirmed and he has been certified at 130lbs.  That makes the scenarios very interesting in the region at 125, 130, and 135 when you consider there are 9 PIAA State Qualifying slots and you also consider that Steve Spearman, McDowell, Jordan Rich, Central Mt., Mitchell Port, Bellefonte, Kody Young, Punxy, Erik Galloway, State College, Scott Bosak, State College, Dylan Matz, McDowell, Kasey Davis, Meadville, Nick Gurol, P-O, Brian Brill, Central Mt., Tyler Parsons, Erie Prep, and Dan Dreibelbis, Bellefonte could all potentially pack into those 3 weight classes.  Londell Cox of Peabody suffered a loss in the semifinals of the Allegheny County Wrestling Championships to Hampton freshman Jake Hart.  Finally, JR Wert, Bellefonte is no longer a member of the Bellefonte wrestling team, his family has moved out of the area.
