District 6

Formerly known as Awards, Best Of is now in its 4th year. Catagories may change from year to year, but will always include Wrestler of the Year, Freshman of the Year, and District 6 AAA & AA All-Star teams. Unlike the final rankings, the all-star selections are based entirely on the level of post-season success. So, you'll see wrestlers on it that didn't finish #1 in the final District 6 Rankings. The following represent my opinions only.

Wrestler of the Year

Quentin Wright

Bald Eagle Area

171

All things considered, Quentin Wright's 2007-08 season may have been the best EVER in District 6. He put an exclamation on his second consectutive undefeated State Title season by being named Outstanding Wrestler in Hershey. Along the way, Quentin found time to enter two college open tournaments (Mat-Town & Penn State), and won both of them, defeating ranked NCAA wrestlers in the process. Penn State bound Wright finished his high school career on a two year winning streak that dates back to the State Finals in his sophomore year losing to future Nittany Lion teammate Tim Darling. Barring injury, he'll be an All-American probable and National Champion contender at the NCAA level.

Freshman of the Year

Ronnie Garbinsky

Tyrone

103

Ronnie Garbinsky has been wrestling, and winning, for so long that it's hard to believe he just now a Freshman. A successful arrival at the high school varsity level was expected, and he didn't disappoint. Ronnie's first season resulted in 39 wins and a spot on the top half of the podium in Hershey with a 4th place finish. He was a District 6 Champion and a finalist in the rugged AA Southwest Regional. Garbinsky combined with A J Schopp to give Tyrone one of the most lethal 1-2 lightweight punches in the state. Expect him to be a regular on the Hershey podium and an annual contender for a state title.

Team of the Year

Central Mountain Wildcats

The 2006-07 season saw the arrival of the Altons-led Fab 5 (Dylan and Andrew Alton, Jordan Rich, Cody Dolan, and Dylan Caprio) on the Central Mountain varsity. Their impact was immediate, and CM became a District 6 power. All five were Regional qualifiers, with three (Rich and both Altons) being state medal winners as freshmen. In 2007-08, with the addition of upperweights Glenn Barnes and Zach Corl, Central Mountain kicked it into high gear and won everything in sight. Their 3rd place finish in the PIAA State Duals elevated them to a spot among PA's elite teams. 2008-09 should see more of the same in Clinton County as most of the lineup returns, and a healthy Cody Dolan will be back with the team.

Not a catagory, but the best news of 2008 had to be

District 6 Wrestling Goes LIVE

2007-08 saw the beginning of a new era in wrestling coverage. Gone were the days of waiting for the next day's online or print newspaper to get wrestling results. After a hiatus, Philpsburg's WPHB resumed webcasting and was joined by Bellefonte's WBLF on the MSA Sports Network. By mid-season, Lock Haven's WSNU had joined them on MSA and there was wrestling webcasts several times each week. Teams were sending results to Intermat, and boxscores became available that same night. In the post season, Escape Sports and NHSCA Live Events provided live brackets to go with the webcasts at Districts, Regionals, and States. Hopefully, this level of coverage will continue in the future.
