Wrestler of the Year

District 6 produced many top individual performances this season, including 3 state championships..my picks for Wrestler of the Year are

AAA

Quentin Wright

Bald Eagle Area

Junior - 160

Quentin Wright's season was awesome. He won Beast of the East, the state title in Hershey, and finished undefeated for the year. Along the way, he also entered some college 'open' tourneys and beat many established college wrestlers. Wright will be a heavy favorite to win another title next year, and should be one of the nation's most sought after recruits in the November early signing period.

AA

Zac Bennett

Westmont-Hilltop

Sophomore - 189

I give the edge to Bennett over fellow state champ Matt Moore here. After making the state finals as a freshman, Zac really stepped it up this year. He earned AA status at Cadet Nationals and then breezed to the state title without a close match along the way. His combination of power & quickness should provide 2 more state titles.

Freshman of the Year

District 6 had it's best freshman group ever this year, so there were several choices including 6 state medalwinners..my picks are :

AAA

Andrew Alton

Central Mountain

130

Having won a Cadet National title in Fargo over the summer, Alton's success was expected and he didn't disappoint. At states, after a tough OT loss in the 1st round, he was dominant in winning 5 straight to take 3rd place. Look for a couple state titles in his future.

AA

A.J. Schopp

Tyrone

103

Schoop served notice at KOM that he'd be a force at 103. It seemed like he kept getting better as the season wore on. A tight 1 point OT loss to then #1 Joe Lascari made him a title contender. AJ's post-season took him all the way to the state finals where he took a very close 4-3 defeat. He'll be one of the top contenders next season.

Best Career (Senior)

AAA

Matt Bonson

Lewistown

Matt finished his high school season by stepping on the podium at states for the 3rd time in his career. A four year starter, he became Mifflin County's all time leader in wins and pins. Bonson will continue his wrestling career at UVA

AA

Matt Moore

Blairsville

Matt Moore finished his high school season by becoming Blairsville's first ever state champion. He also got a win representing Team PA at the Dapper Dan. Matt was a 4x qualifier and 3x medalwinner at states. Moore will continue his career at UPJ.
