Two incredible matches! Kiski Area defeats Connellsville 33 – 27!!!
Canon McMillan defeats Penn Trafford 28 – 27!!!
Finals will be wrestled this Saturday. As usual, no one knows where yet or at what time. Typical poor marketing of wrestling ….but that’s another story. The battle for 3rd spot will be Saturday also. Would assume at the same location. Congratulations to both Kiski and Canon McMillan for making it into the PIAA team playoffs! The third place team from the Wpial will be no slouch either!
Consi finals to be wrestled at Charleroi High School this Saturday at 6pm.

Here’s some team updates (I’ll wait until sectionals to update individuals…want to see where everyone is going).
Team Sectional results were as follows: Kiski defeated Greater Latrobe 37 -23. Penn Trafford defeated Franklin Regional 27-23. Greater Latrobe defeated Franklin Regional 46-20. And, Penn Trafford in a “barn burner” defeated Kiski 28-27!!! This tournament was for seeding purposes for the Team Wpial Championship (seems a little superfluous....but, fun). As of now, I’m still sticking with Connellsville, Penn Trafford, Kiski Area, Canon McMillan, Greater Latrobe and Franklin Regional. Canon McMillan is the “dark horse” in a way. I haven’t seen them this year and a lot will depend if Mike Hull wrestles for them or not….

Connellsville wins Battlefield duals. They defeated Colonial Forge and Robinson Secondary School along the way. Penn Trafford is tearing it up. They knocked off Greater Latrobe 40-24 in a dual meet at Latrobe. The match was close and could have gone either way. Butler also takes out Greater Latrobe 33-29! Tough week for Latrobe but great matches for the fans. As for Mike Hull (Canon McMillan), I am removing him from the rankings until he wrestles. Sam Sherlock had surgery on his knee. Let’s hope he’s ready for Penn State next season. He’ll be missed by us WPIAL fans. Chace Small was injured at the Latrobe/Penn Trafford match. Ryan Bohince was beating him at the time of the inj dflt. How could I have left out Cole Baxter at 171?! He takes over #1 at the weight. Team standings: Connellsville, Kiski Area (Their match vs Connellsville was cancelled), Canon McMillan, Penn Trafford, Butler, Greater Latrobe. Others to watch out for: Waynesburg, North Allegheny, Hopewell, Franklin Regional.

***Unfortunate news: Sam Sherlock has torn his ACL and is out for the season. Tyler Zymrox from Central Catholic now moves into the #1 spot. Kiski Area starting to impress. They won the WCCA tournament over Greater Latrobe and Penn Trafford 197, 164, 151.5 respectively. It doesn’t seem like they have a weak weight in their lineup. Connellsville still holds down the #1 spot followed by Kiski Area, Canon McMillan, Greater Latrobe and Penn Trafford. Penn Trafford has been handling teams with ease and therefore moves into the top 5. Others to watch: Franklin Regional, Butler, Hopewell, North Allegheny, and Derry.

Slowly figuring out the 103 pound weight class. Connor Schram from Canon McMillan takes 3rd at the Powerade and slides into 1st for the time being. I still don’t have all the info for 103 so, expect some changes. Haven’t heard if Michael Hull (CMac-189) has had a match yet. He was a no show at the Powerade. Hopewell making a move with some strong individual showings. Team Rankings: Connellsville, Latrobe, Kiski Area, Canon McMillan, Franklin Regional. Note: Had to eliminate the individual records. Very difficult time getting all match scores, etc…The 135 lb weight class is beginning to look loaded!

Welcome back everyone. Couldn’t get updated lineups to you till now…virus destroyed my computer! But enough venting. Here’s a first go around for D7 AAA Rankings. I’ll be ranking them where they’re certified (mostly). Note: Michael Hull is now wrestling again. He will be a force at 189. Once I figure out who’s at 103, I’ll post. As for the teams, Connellsville looks to repeat. They have a large part of their lineup returning. Greater Latrobe, Kiski, Canon McMillan should make it far into the tournament as well. A dark horse could be Franklin Regional. They’ve had a great youth movement going on for several years. They are making their way to the high school.

Hope everyone enjoyed the Wpial and State Wrestling Tournaments. Many wrestlers dropped weight (as expected)….just had to wait and see who they were. The following wrestlers were state champs from the WPIAL:
James Goulibon – 103
Nico Megaludis – 112
Shane Young – 119
Sam Sherlock – 125
Joe Waltko – 130
Jake Kemmerer – 160
Nathan Gaffney – 215.
Thought they’d do well….but, 7!! Nice job guys. I’ll post the top returning wrestlers in the Fall. Hope you enjoyed the rankings - Wpial Bigot

Several changes throughout the rankings have been made. Sections for District 7 start Saturday - February 21st. Top three from each section advance to the WPIAL Tournament (Feb 27th and 28th). There are six sections. Hence, 18 wrestlers move onto the Regional Tournament. Note: District 7 is its own Region. They call the Regional tournament “WPIALS” or “Wips”. The top three from the “Wpials” qualify for the state tournament. If I can find out where Regionals/WPIALS is being held….I’ll let you know.

Congrats to Bethel Park - this years’ Wpial AAA team champs! They Defeated Hempfield 31-25 in the semis and took out Connellsville 42-21 in the finals. The team finished the season undefeated and now heads to Hershey. Connellsville comes in 2nd and Hempfield takes 3rd.
1/30/09
Hempfield nips Connellsville at section duals. Penn Trafford gets revenge on Derry and defeats them in Section finals. Bethel Park still undefeated. First round of Wpial Team Tournament begins tonight. If Hempfield and Derry meet in 2nd round…a coin toss can make this very very interesting.
Benzio from Connellsville no longer wrestling!? Kemmerer weighing in at the mid/low 60’s!

Others To Watch: Albert Gallatin, Canon McMillan, Fox Chapel
People dropping weights all over. Tough to keep up. I’ll try and get updates quickly over the next week or two. How about the match between Penn Trafford and Latrobe! Penn Trafford destroys them 25-24!!! Obviously joking. Talk about a well wrestled match. If you give 3 point decisions to all 14 weight classes…that would be a total of 42 pts scored total in a bout. This match had 49! Nice job from both teams. Now the fun continues. Can Connellsville and Bethel Park take out Derry or Penn Trafford? Connellsville has some nice wins: 48-30 over Kiski and 33-24 over Albert Gallatin (both solid teams). Bethel Park was destroying teams at the Trinity duals. They also have wins over Kiski and Albert Gallatin (42-18 and 40-24 respectively). Hempfield will be wrestling Albert Gallatin Wed. night and the winner will take on Connellsville. Derry could see a rematch against Penn Trafford if they can both get by Kiski and Franklin Regional Tonight.
Anyone notice Jamal Conroy (Shaler) at 285 making his way into the rankings. He’s presently undefeated.

Others To Watch: Albert Gallatin, Canon McMillan, Fox Chapel
Nick Rodgers (North Allegheny – 119) has not wrestled since mid December. He is presently out of the rankings. Dante Decario (Derry 119) has a shoulder injury and he may be lost for the season. He is also no longer ranked. Joe Waltko (North Allegheny) drops to 130. With Thomas (Central Catholic) defeating Sherlock….this weight class got loaded quickly. Nathan Cully (Seneca Valley) defeats Robert Blotzer of South Allegheny at 145 (5-3). Wesley Weston (South Allegheny) now at 152.
Bethel Park still only ranked 4th. Are they getting no respect? They are continuing to impress. They just beat Albert Gallatin 40-24. I’m sticking with the top 3 until someone beats them. Unfortunately, since all 3 are in the same section, one of them will be staying home for the playoffs.

Others To Watch: Albert Gallatin, Canon McMillan, Fox Chapel
Congratulations to the following Powerade Champs: Jimmy Goulibon (Derry), Nico Megaludis (Franklin Regional), Shane Young (Penn Trafford), Nathan Pennesi (Latrobe), and Jake Kemerer (Hempfield). The following took 2nd: Jack Bachman (Hempfield), Adam Lazenga (Bethel Park), and Sam Brownlee (Cannon McMillan).
Note: Many wrestlers are at weights different from their certification. I’ve tried to rank the individuals according to the lowest weight they’ve wrestled so far this year.
12/24/08
Others To Watch For: Canon McMillan, Fox Chapel, Albert Gallatin, Franklin Regional (Haven’t seen them wrestle yet. However, with the youth movement they have, they should be tough).
Individual Notes: Heard Mike Hull has signed a letter of intent to play football for Penn State and will not be wrestling this year. We wish him the best of luck. Haven’t heard about Brownlee from Canon McMillan. Therefore, he’s not yet rated. Hope all of you have a great holiday season!
